When asked what my favorite recipes are, I tell people they’re the dishes people remember, like chicken and dumplings, or hand-breaded pork chops. Or pie. And it’s not just the flavor of the foods that are unforgettable, but also the memories they invoke of another time in life. Perhaps of being a little boy sitting on a stool in Grandma’s farmhouse as she frosted a chocolate birthday cake that looked larger than life. Or of being a five-year-old girl, trying to eat Mom’s pot roast with two bottom teeth missing.
And many of us may remember what fun Sundays were, when aunts, uncles and cousins would gather at a familiar home for dinner.
No matter where we were raised or by whom, it’s likely each of us has at least one fond memory of yesteryear where food was instrumental in the experience.
Several months ago, while working on a cooking segment with a production team, I made dinner for the crew after a full day of filming: hand-breaded pork chops and creamy country gravy. I asked one of the producers (a fellow from Hollywood!) if he’d like chocolate milk with his dinner as I held the glass and carton in front of him. He hesitated for a moment while pondering my offer. But then his eyes twinkled, and with an impish grin, he nodded and said, “Yeah, I think I would like some chocolate milk.” This Hollywood producer was probably used to eating and drinking whatever he wanted in the finest restaurants. But I doubt any of the servers ever offered him a glass of chocolate milk.
It doesn’t take much to make someone happy. Nor does it take a lot of money. Just a little something made in the kitchen with a side dish of nostalgia.
